Research Funded by the Spencer Foundation and involves the collection and analysis of ethnographic and survey data on cultural values, child care policy and children's peer in the United States and Italy. 1990-1992 Research Study, "Early Education, Peer Culture and Caring: Children's Transition from the Family to Educational Institutions." Research funded by the Spencer and William T. Grant Foundations and involves the longitudinal study of a small group of lower income families as their children move from the family to early educational institutions. 1996-2006 Research Study, “Children's Transition from Home to School in the United States, Italy.” Longitudinal study begun during sabbatical in 1996. The study involved comparative ethnographies of children's transition from preschool to elementary school in two countries. 2006-Present Research Study, Children and Civil Society: Norwegian Children’s Perception of Their Participation in the Celebration of May 17 (Norwegian Constitution Day). The study involves observations and interviews of children and youth in regard to their perceptions and participation in civil society activities that revolve around the celebration of May 17th in Norway. May 17th marks the signing of the Norwegian constitution and has been transformed into a special day for children and youth.
